5 Ways to “Pencil in” Joy into your Schedule

Open your planner for a second.

I’m willing to bet it’s filled with meetings, appointments, deadlines, errands, and all the things that have to get done. We carefully schedule work, family commitments, and responsibilities because we know they’re important.

But when was the last time you actually penciled in something that simply brought you joy?

Somewhere along the way, many of us started believing that joy is something we’ll get to after everything else is finished. The problem is, the to-do list never really ends. There is always another email to answer, another load of laundry to fold, another project waiting to begin.

If we wait until life slows down before taking care of ourselves, we may be waiting forever.

Choosing yourself isn’t selfish. It’s necessary.

Taking care of yourself doesn’t always mean booking a vacation or spending an entire day at the spa. More often than not, it looks like the little moments you intentionally create throughout your week.

Those moments matter.

When we make room for things that recharge us, we return to our responsibilities with more patience, more energy, and a healthier mindset. We show up as better parents, educators, leaders, friends, and partners because we’ve remembered that we matter too.

Five Ways to Pencil in Joy

1. Schedule joy like it’s an appointment.

Instead of hoping you’ll find time, make the time. Block off 20 or 30 minutes in your calendar for something that makes you smile. Protect it the same way you would any other important commitment. For example, I love to pencil in my at home manicures. I really enjoy painting my nails. It brings me so much joy.

2. Find joy in the little things.

Joy doesn’t have to be expensive or time consuming. Read a chapter of a good book. Take your coffee outside. Listen to your favorite playlist on the drive home. Watch the sunset. Small moments add up.

3. Say no without feeling guilty.

Every “yes” takes time from somewhere else. Sometimes protecting your peace means politely declining one more commitment so you can keep a promise to yourself. This one is still a work in progress.

4. Create a daily joy ritual.

Choose one thing you can look forward to every day. Maybe it’s a morning walk, journaling for ten minutes, reading before bed, or calling someone who makes you laugh. Consistency is what turns self-care into a habit.

5. Remember that you deserve care too.

It’s easy to spend our days taking care of everyone else. But you can’t continuously pour from an empty cup. Your well-being deserves a place on your priority list.

Your Challenge This Week

Before you close your planner today, write down one thing that brings you joy and actually schedule it.

Remember… joy isn’t something you stumble upon by accident. It’s something you choose, protect, and make room for. So go ahead, pencil in moments of joy.

Your future self will thank you.

Affirmation
